Masai Mara, Kenya, Africa

The Big Cat Game

16 - 26 January 2027 10 Days · 9 Nights Max 6 Guests Private Vehicles Luxury Lodges Full Board
I first came to the Mara in January and it changed everything for me. The grass is short, the light is golden for longer, and the cats the lions especially are everywhere. I've had mornings in the Mara in January that I genuinely cannot explain to someone who hasn't been there. You just have to see it.
This workshop is ten days in one of the most extraordinary places I've ever photographed. We stay at Oltepesi, which sits right on the reserve boundary with nothing between you and the plains. Pre-dawn departures every morning in private vehicles, golden hour every evening, and the kind of encounters that remind you why you picked up a camera in the first place. I'll be alongside you throughout not just leading the safari, but working with you on your photography every single day.

Masai Mara Workshop Itinerary

  • January 16th

Guests arrive into Nairobi on international flights and check into our base hotel. This evening we have a relaxed dinner and a proper briefing on what the next ten days are going to look like. The light in the Mara, what we might encounter, how to shoot fast-moving subjects in open savannah, and the rhythm of a safari day.

  • January 17th

Early morning transfer to Wilson Airport for the domestic flight to Mara Olkiombo or Aitong airstrip about 45 minutes over some of the most beautiful landscape in East Africa. Oltepesi camp member meet us at the airstrip. After settling into the tents and a proper lunch, we head straight out for the afternoon drive.

  • January 18th - January 25th

Morning drives run until mid-morning, then back to camp for breakfast and rest. Afternoons we go out again and stay until the last light disappears. Each evening we will sit together as a group and go through the day's images.

  • January 26th

One last dawn drive — the Mara always has something in reserve for the final morning. After brunch at camp, transfer to the airstrip for the domestic flight back to Nairobi Wilson Airport. Check in at the base hotel and go over images.

Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp
Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp is a specialist photographic safari camp in Maasai Mara, Kenya, established in 2017 based on a shared photography concept developed by Arnfinn Johansen and John Siololo. It is an eco safari camp, made for professional wildlife photographers and nature photo enthusiasts. The camp is located in Oltepesi Village, a genuine Maasai village about five minutes from the border to Maasai Mara National Reserve. With this unique location, you will also experience the Maasai people’s traditional and famous culture.

Accommodation is provided in spacious safari tents. While no rooms are identical in appearance, each is equipped with an en-suite bathroom, featuring a shower, washbasin, and flush toilet. Staying within a Maasai village rather than in a typical tourist lodge offers a unique chance to experience the pride and culture of the Maasai people firsthand. Their hospitality is truly remarkable and you can enjoy a traditional Maasai-style barbecue.
